Nowhere is the residue of time more apparent than when one enters a ruin of a building frozen in mid explosion or suspended crumble. Covered in layers of dust and moss, vines of unstoppable nature, these decrepit spaces are capsules of time, from both the past and foretelling the future. It is with a sense of excitement tempered with futility that I explore these eerie spaces and odd occupants under decades of dust, knowing I cannot capture every fascinating detail.  So I focus on curious objects and odd juxtapositions of remains of the abandoned man made.
Where else can one encounter such portals of time travel, layered beauty of decades of decay?
These unexpected glimpses of the past and future I attempt to freeze in time. This is why I trespass

I don’t remember my artist statement/bio to reproduce it here as IP did hers, but suffice it to say it was a bit of overheated prose about the nature of modern romanticism, the camera I shoot with, and my tolerance for my wife’s cats.

[Because I can I’m going to butt-in to insert Tabula Rasa’s Artist Statement  -tip]

We worship the new and improved. Retailers and fast food restaurants lead the way, razing and rebuilding their stores before they begin to look even a bit dated. The old and abandoned are rarely seen, as they are usually hidden in forgotten or “bad” parts of town. But decay can be beautiful. The stripped, stark buildings we visit offer up their charms to those who look. Peeling paint explodes in fractal patterns, twisted metal casts odd shadows, and deserted workstations echo their former occupants. To step into them is to enter a world foreign to ours, one beautiful, dangerous and haunting in turn.

Ahem.
So, without further ado, here are the ten shots that make up my contribution to Tresspass.

Currently my friends and I have our images hanging the gallery at our local library.  It is a modest first show but given how well trafficked and relevant our library is to our community a lot people are going to see it.  This Sunday is the Artist Reception and I figured that since most of you will not be able to come out and visit us we’d offer up our images here in a virtual gallery.

So step right in and welcome to “Trespass; Exploring Urban Decay”.

Artist Statement:

In the downtown of a once major city a long abandoned hotel looms over city hall, just two blocks away a massive church sits crumbling beneath a blanket of ivy and trees sprout from its rooftop. Places like these are our memento mori, reminders that in our world of newer, better and shinier everything will one day crumble and return to earth, even the mightiest works of our hands. In them I find not only a reminder of my mortality and the frailty of our creations, but a celebration of life and wonder where owls nest in long forgotten coal hoppers and rabbits make a home on the third floor of a long abandoned factory.
Exploring these places involves risks most people are not comfortable with, but in them there is a sense of completeness the world we choose to live in lacks. This is why I explore.
